Blog Post #2

Hello! Welcome to our second blog post. From now on I will be writing about what we did this week in class, and what's coming up the following week.

I hope that you all had a pleasant Monday! We did not have to go to our school that day because of the staff day the teachers had. So, the teachers, unfortunately, did not get the day to themselves.

On Tuesday in Humanities, we started off the day with a Check-in Circle. Where we talked about our Thanksgiving break and other things that popped up in conversation.

After that, we had our slam poetry lesson with Ms. Jean. Where we answered four questions posted around the room, them all being related to spoken word poetry, and performances. Once everybody got around to answering those questions, we sat down and go two pieces of paper. They were scripts of two performances that we listened to. The first being "Cynthia, You're Dead" and "Islamophobia". We had to use what we wrote in response to the earlier questions to help us identify which one was a spoken word performance. In the end, we said that "Islamophobia" was the one that fit our criteria best.

We also got our new assigned seats, but we still sat with our book club group on some occasions.

In Art, we were sewing, cutting, creating slideshows and posters, and helped people that needed assistance.

Finally, in Math and Science, we got our new unit for math, which was measurements. We also paid our taxes and got new seating assignments which would stick for two weeks.

On Wednesday in Humanities, we met up with our old book club groups and talked about some ideas we had for the group poem that we would share. While we were with our groups, we also talked about themes in our books.

After we were done with this, we had a lesson about theme and mood. Where we watched two videos that were about the same topic but had drastically different views. First, we watched the trailer for Mary Poppins (the older one, not the new movie), and talked about what the mood in this video was. Since it was a very upbeat and jolly video, we decided the mood of happiness! Next, we watched a video titled Scary Mary, which was, scary. The mood for this video was spine-chilling, or just kind of creepy. It is kind of bizarre how some of the clips used in the Mary Poppins trailer were used in Scary Mary but in a completely different way, like her spinning head, for example.

In Art, we did the same thing as we did on Tuesday. We sewed, cut pieces of fabrics, finished up our slideshow, and continued working on posters.

In Math and Science, we had a warmup with the question of, "What should happen if someone doesn't do their job?". Most people suggested giving them one or two warnings before them getting fired. One of the warning ideas was to lower their pay until they got back on track. We then spent our time working on and finishing up our taxes.

After that, we got to start making our businesses! However, certain criteria had to be followed. Like, everyone has to be able to do it, and the obvious, "It has to be school appropriate". Finally, we received our POL packets and were sent on our way.

On Thursday in Humanities, we got out our vocabulary words we found while reading our book club books, and searched up definitions for them. If and when you finished, you could take some vocabulary words from our previous book that we read as a class, A Long Walk to Water, and search up definitions for those words. Then, we had a study hall period.

In Art, we were finishing up our quilt squares, while the people that already finished were helping out people that weren't.

In Math and Science, we had a lesson about circles, covering radius, diameter, and circumference. Then, like in Humanities, we went into a study hall.

On Friday in Humanities, we had our Socratic Seminars. For Class A, you had to speak your opinions on Women's Rights. While in Class B, we talked about reviving extinct animal species, and if it is right or wrong. Before the Socratic Seminar in Class A, you went to your kinder buddies to help them color their hero symbol. After our Socratic Seminar in Class B, we worked on our next reader response journal, about the book that you are currently reading.

In Art, we had our due-date for our quilt squares, some people helped the people that were still working on them, others were helping with certain tasks around the room.

In Math and Science, we had our Life Cycle, which meant if you had bought auto, health, and home insurance from a business previously, you wouldn't have to pay anything! Then, like the day before, we had a study hall period.

Today, since we didn't have X-Block (because the 6th graders had a field trip), so our final period of the day in 7th grade was used for karaoke! The whole 7th grade went down to the Main Commons to sing! It was a great experience, and that was the first time since the beginning of the school year that the entire grade has gotten together, so it was memorable, too.

Thank you for taking the time to read this summary of the week, and I hope you'll tune in next time.
